A good development in the Dutch cash money market, cash money is becoming increasingly loose from the banks; Geldmaat opens their first store in Amsterdam. Well, it’s a shame that this is accelerated by criminal activity because even without criminals, cash money should be separate from commercial banks.
Let’s face it, cash is a product of (in the Netherlands) the central bank DNB (notes) and the Ministry of Finance (coins) and they should take on the role of product owner much more than now. DNB in particular has the necessary advantages of putting cash on the market. And that while the current distribution channel, the banks, can hardly charge costs. Just look at the discussion that has been going on for years in the Netherlands, also in our parliament, about whether or not to charge costs for cash.
A nice next step would be for Geldmaat (owned by ABN AMRO, RABO and ING) to work on behalf of the product owners and receive compensation or be allowed to ask for money from the public.
