“COP26: Triodos targets net zero by 2035 – and encourages peers to follow suit”

Triodos announces during the COP26 climate summit to be climate neutral by 2035. There are also card products on the market that provide insight into the carbon footprint generated by the purchases made with that card. But what about the CO2 emissions caused by the various payment products?

Cryptos are known to be far from energy-friendly and will therefore belong to the top environmentally damaging payment products. I also expect that credit and debit cards will cause an above average amount of CO2 emissions. I suspect that batch payments, delivered 1 – 2 days before processing, will generate the smallest CO2 emissions. Instant payments will be slightly more environmentally unfriendly, but not nearly as much as card payments.

CO2 and payments, perhaps a nice research assignment at DNB or ECB.
